Upon entering 976 Elmwood Ave., an array of pizzas is laid out on the stone countertop, waiting to be devoured by hungry customers. The scents of pepperoni, sausage and Italian food fill the air, and mouths start to salivate.

Welcome to the newest location of Zetti’s Pizza & Pasta at the corner of Bidwell Parkway and Elmwood Avenue.

“I like the fact that they put all their pizzas out so you can see them,” Edward Tierney said. “It’s like a candy shop.”

Zetti’s is different from other Buffalo pizzerias, as it specializes in New York-style pizza. That pizza is usually thin, wide and “foldable,” with a puffy outer crust tapering down to a thin, crispy middle.

Tierney, 47, lives on Bidwell Parkway, right across from Zetti’s, and has now visited the new location three times since it opened just under two weeks ago.

Aside from the scent and display of pizzas, the dining area of the restaurant holds 13 wooden tables of various sizes. The cream and purple walls and lighting are modern, bright and open. Large windows in the front of the building offer diners a view of Elmwood Avenue.

“I think they did a good job of utilizing the space,” Tierney said.

Customers will find a variety of options on the menu, which offers more than just pizza and pasta.

A slice of cheese pizza is $1.80, and since the slices are New York-style, a slice is the size of two slices at other pizzerias in the area.

Zetti’s also has several gourmet pizza options, including a Penne alla Vodka pizza, which includes penne pasta, vodka sauce and mozzarella cheese.

In addition to pizza, there are hero sandwiches, calzones and entrees.

While the menu includes traditional Italian dishes, other unique options are also available, including pasta a coure, which includes shrimp, chicken and artichoke hearts sauteed in a white wine lemon butter sauce over pasta.

Zetti’s isn’t the first pizzeria to open in this location. Just Pizza was housed there before it moved to the corner of Elmwood Avenue and Summer Street. Uncle Joe’s Pizzeria was also located in the building, which was built in 1895.

“It’s good to have it in the Elmwood area,” Bill Nimelman said.

Nimelman, 50, also lives on Bidwell Parkway across from the restaurant.

This is Zetti’s third location in the Buffalo area. They have restaurants across from both SUNY University at Buffalo campus locations, including one at 3500 Main St. in Amherst. The other location, at 4621 Maple Road, opened in November 2009.

Hours for the Elmwood location aren’t solidified yet, but an employee said the restaurant is likely to be open until midnight on weeknights and 2 a.m. on weekends. Customers can eat in, take out, or call for delivery.

The Beresford Building on Sauchiehall St. It was opened as a hotel in 1938, in the 60s became student housing and is now apartments. This is one of those on-the-way-to-the-camera-shop sort of shots, which worked better than it has any right to, especially because I was without a light meter all day!

UPDATED FRIENDS INFO POST!

Even if you filled out the old one, please post your info here! I know I have most of your info but this way, I'll have EVERYTHING in one comprehensive post for myself.

My old friends info post was from 2008, so I'm sure some people have moved, interests have changed, etc. etc. and I've also gotten several new friends, so I figure making a new post is the easiest way to take care of everything at once & make sure no one's left out.

Please fill out the following information.
If you do, I shall send you birthday cards, holiday cards, etc. because I love doing that sort of thing :) What can I say?
(I might even write you an actualfax! letter someday, if I have time~)

Full name:
Birthday (please include year):
Do you mind getting snail mail letters? Would you send me one back?
Three of your favorite things:
Favorite hockey team(s) and player(s):
Anything else you want me to know about you:
Twitter username (especially if you don't have an LJ):
Mailing Address:

Comments are screened, obviously.

I would put my info in this post, but the post itself is ~public~ so people who don't have LJs can see & leave comments. So if you want my info, just ask for it and I'll DM it to you here or on Twitter or wherever :)

Did we miss something? Have a link for us? Please leave a comment or send an email to rsprophet@gmail.com!

We're going to keep this short and sweet (Frank and birthday vgifts will be back next week). You've probably seen the updates to our main menu. Don't be alarmed. You'll find everything you need, just in slightly shifted format. Just so you know, we based these changes on input from both experienced and new users who were not familiar with LiveJournal. Our goal was to reduce barriers to usability and make LiveJournal more accessible and easy to navigate. Please note that this is a work in progress. We welcome your detailed suggestions in [info]feedback. We thank you, in advance, for helping us improve your LiveJournal experience.

We've updated the global navigation menu:

Here's a quick breakdown of what you'll find where:
  • Scrapbook can now be found under Profile (thanks for your feedback, btw), along with Settings, Stats, and Edit Profile.
  • You'll find all the tools you need to post and update entries under Journal, which includes posting and editing entries, managing comments and tags, and customizing your journal's style.
  • Friends contains all of your friend settings, from filtering your Friends page to adding, removing, and finding new and existing friends on LiveJournal.
  • Under Communities, you'll find links to manage your communities, accept community invites, and create new communities.
  • Explore includes search features, RSS feeds, Question of the Day, and FRNK radio.
  • Under Shop, you'll find links to upgrade or give a paid account, buy virtual gifts, purchase LiveJournal merchandise (like T-shirts), and view your payment history.

LiveJournal Mobile update:

We've enhanced LiveJournal's mobile site to improve usability and load times. We've made more of LiveJournal's features accessible via mobile, including posting comments, uploading photos, reading and commenting on friends' posts, finding and messaging friends, and more. We look forward to reviewing your feedback and recommendations for future improvements.

Other important changes:

  • You can lock comments to prevent further commenting on a post, while leaving existing comments visible.
  • We replaced the "Tell a friend" link with a new "Share This" widget that lets you share LiveJournal posts on other social media sites, including Facebook, Digg, Twitter, etc.
  • We changed some of the icons on entries (you can hover over the icons to view descriptions).
  • You'll see a Tag count on your Tag management page.
  • You'll now see the 10 most recent vgifts on your profile page. To remove vgifts, left-click on the vgift and choose whether you want to remove the vgift from your profile or delete it entirely.
  • We've added options to help you control receipt of vgifts, which you'll find in My Stuff under Edit Profile. You can now enable vgifts from friends or everyone and disable anonymous vgifts.

We've got your fix:

  • UPDATE: Rolling several updates into one listing here -- 1) Scrapbook should be back and working again. 2) The problem with the Update Journal page in IE6 and IE7 should be fixed now. 3) The problem with the userpic add-on package pricing has been fixed and refunds issued to anyone who was overcharged while the erroneous prices were in place.
  • Non-conforming images will now be automatically resized for custom mood themes.
  • Line breaks no longer count as two characters against your entry's character limit.
  • We fixed a bug on the Manage Tags page so you can clear all tags and add new tags.
  • We corrected the UI for the update.bml page so it displays properly in IE8.
Thanks again for joining us. Frank and company will be back next week!

Sunday Reading

  • Mar. 14th, 2010 at 5:29 PM
It being Sunday, I am combining my daily routine of writing with the frenzied hunted air of a hamster taped to a laptop with thinking thinky thoughts about books.

Spinning off of same, here is a guest blog on Books Sarah Rees Brennan Would Like to See As Movies. In which I mainly complain about movies I do not like, because that is the way I roll. But really - who adds an evil twin in a snowglobe? It is never a good idea.

Karen Healey, whose excellent book Guardian of the Dead I will be reviewing shortly, along with several other very fine books just as soon as I have finished writing my own book (Can't sleep! Deadline will get me!) has a very interesting post on YA Fantasy: Full of Miscreants. Which sprang from a conversation we had in which she blackened one of my characters' names and I defended said character valiantly.

It occurred to me only after reading her blog post that she mostly discusses the Bad Boy Heroes of young adult fantasy, whereas the guy she discusses for my book is the (comparatively) good guy sidekick. So not only is my bad boy a little too bad for the tastes of some, but so's my nice guy. Oh, self. Get a commercial instinct someday. Put it on your shopping list along with ginger biscuits!

I was also thinking about this less-recent post Justine Larbalestier wrote about, among other things, readers who only read one of an author's serieses...es and I was thinking about that also! I mean, I know it happens all the time, no matter how successful a writer is. A whoooooole lot of people read Stephenie Meyer's The Host, for instance. But about a zillionty more people read Twilight.

And this of course makes sense: for one thing, some readers don't think about the writer - they are super into these specific characters, and wish to be with them! But some people seem to actively resent the other books an author writes as if, had they not got the idea for this New Thing, they would have written more of the Old Thing. And again, that makes sense: much nicer to go 'Mmm, I like this thing. Where is more of it? Oh, here it is! Yay!' than 'I will try it and I hope I will like it...' I've seen people on the internet upset about George R.R. Martin's new novella because what they want is a new Song of Ice and Fire book - though wanting the next book in a series is obviously a lovely and flattering thing, and waiting is hard, they do seem very upset.

As someone not-crazy-famous, plus a baby author with only one book out, it's not something I have had to address myself, but as someone finishing the third book of her trilogy and thinking about writing other things, it is a Topic of Interest to me! I have thus been scouting the internet looking at people's thoughts on the matter: two writers I know are starting new serieseseses this year, and it is all most interesting.

So, any thoughts on awful or excellent movie adaptations you have seen, or excellent ones you would like to see? Any thoughts on the badly behaved characters in fiction? Books you have resented because they are not That Thing You Want? Hit me!
